Dinosaur Derby…
Yes – Dinosaurs do really race!
A roarsome afternoon... 2023 Report
After two whole years away and fully rested, the dinosaurs were very pleased to be back at the annual Dinosaur derby.
The Scout Group’s main fund-raising event of the year is normally held on the second Sunday in September, and it is based on an old-fashioned country fair theme with lots of sideshows.
One of the biggest, family fun, community events held in Denmead every year, gates opened at the Scout Hut in Kidmore Lane at 1:30pm to the sounds of the Denmead Bass Band with an over 1,500 people in attendance.
Prior to the first race at 2pm we held a 2 minutes silence to reflect and pay tribute to our late patron Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. This was a very poignant moment which was respected by all those in attendance.
We were extremely fortunate that the weather was kind and the sun shone all afternoon. A few volunteers even went home with red faces!
The dinosaurs were obviously well rested after a two-year break and were in full race mode completing 6 races, thank you to all our race sponsors. This year race 6 was run in memory of our dearly loved Scout Group President, Bernie Reid.
In between races people enjoyed all the traditional games; wheel of fortune, splat the rat, crockery smash and many, many more. The children particularly loved a bounce and a slide on the large inflatable.
The fancy dress costumes were fewer than normal but what they lacked in numbers they made up in spades for in design and cuteness. Congrats to the winners!
The tearoom was filled with amazing homemade cakes and jam, both of which were truly delicious and devoured. Local Denmead artist “hensey” even paid the Scouts and Dinosaurs a visit in the tearoom, we were really pleased and honoured to find Dino Hen number 4.
We are yet to confirm how much money we raised for the group, but we will be sure to let you know. The funds will enable us to continue supporting our youth members delivering a programme of activities to gain “skills for life”. We take this opportunity to thank all the local businesses who supported us and the people of Denmead and beyond who never fail to come out and support us.
It is safe to say that the afternoon was fit for a King and you can rest assured that we will be back again next year. If you would like to volunteer for next years committee or to be a part of the group please contact our group scout leader Tracy at [email protected]
